(Mat 5:48 NKJV) "Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.

Notice God's standard is perfection. Later on Jesus describes to one man what he must do to be perfect (Mat 19:21 NKJV) Jesus said to him, "If you want to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me." In the society of Jesus' day, this could include all residences, properties. Clearly, what this man was requested to do was impossible without God's intervention.

Does every one fall short (Rom 3:23 NKJV) for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. The Bible clearly teaches that ALL have sinned — that's you and me.

Of course, you might say, what about those who never heard. The Bible answers by saying that (Rom 2:12 NKJV) For as many as have sinned without law will also perish without law, and as many as have sinned in the law will be judged by the law. In other words, regardless of where we have lived, we will be judged by the circumstances under which we lived.

The Bible — whether we like it or not — teaches that the penalty of missing God's perfection is death. (Rom 5:12 NKJV) Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned; Also God tells us (2 Pet 2:4,9 NKJV) For if God did not spare the angels who sinned, but cast them down to hell and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved for judgment; . . . then the Lord knows how to deliver the godly out of temptations and to reserve the unjust under punishment for the day of judgment.
